Corruption

What corruption is… is a form of dishonesty or criminal offense undertaken by a person or organisation entrusted with a position of authority, to acquire illicit benefit or abuse power for one’s private gain.

Examples of Corruption and crime (not limited) to:

Bribery
: the offering, giving, soliciting, or receiving of any item of value as a means of influencing the actions of an individual holding a public or legal duty.

Theft: the action or crime of stealing.

Fraud: wrongful or criminal deception intended to result in financial or personal gain.

Child exploitation: the use of children for someone else’s advantage, gratification or profit often resulting in unjust, cruel and harmful treatment of the child. 

What impact corruption has on organisations. Individuals and communities…damage to organisation’s reputation

-Damage to employee morale

-Termination of employment

-Criminal charges

-May affect relationships with family, friends and colleagues.

-Loss of goods and services

-Lower community confidence in organisations

Ways to prevent corruption in the workplace…

-Conduct awareness training for employees, so they can learn the policies and procedures around anti-corruption

-Expose corrupt activities and risks that may otherwise remain hidden

-Keep the public sector honest, transparent and accountable

-Ensure that employees act in the public/community interest.

Who can I contact if I witness or suspect corruption…

If you think corruption is happening in your workplace or a organisation you know, don’t confront the suspected perpetrator. Instead, contact the Director of the organisation or workplace and report this to them. From there that person can contact the local authorities for corruption to have the issue handled correctly. The ACLEI Report Corruption Hotline is (02) 6141 2345. This number is a monitored voicemail service- undertakes criminal and corruption investigations

The Advocacy and Legal Advice Centre (ALAC) of TI Cambodia- 1292, 7777- free legal advice and assistance to victims and witnesses of corruption and gathers corruption-related information.
